You will walk through peaceful mountain trails where you feel moving close to the mountains, walk through traditional villages, and see the lifestyle in remote villages up close, and be welcomed by beautiful smiles. You will return feeling warm in your hearts with the hospitality of the people, where it is believed guests are equal to gods.

In this blog, we’ll look at the best time for the Mardi Himal Trek and what you can expect in each season, along with the unique beauty each season brings to the Mardi Himal landscape, to help you choose the season that suits your trekking plans.

Mardi Himal Trekking

1. Spring (March to May)

Spring is one of the best times for the Mardi Himal Trek. During this season, the weather gradually becomes warmer, and the forests along the trail come alive with rhododendrons in vibrant colors of deep red, bright pink, delicate white, and soft purple shades. The blooming forests, green hills, and snow-covered mountains create beautiful scenery throughout the journey.

Month-by-month breakdown:

  • Sky Visibility: The skies are clear, and visibility is excellent during early mornings. However, as late spring approaches, clouds may gather in the valleys during the afternoon and cover the mountain ridges.
  • Daytime Temperature: Temperatures are pleasant during the day, ranging from 10°C to 15°C in early March and reaching around 25°C in the lower sections by late May.
  • Nighttime Temperature: Nights at High Camp become less cold as the season progresses. Temperatures rise from around -10°C in early March to a more manageable -3°C by May.
  • Trail Conditions: The trails are generally stable and not muddy at all. However, trekkers may encounter small patches of melting snow on the final high-altitude section in early March.
  • Crowds: March is relatively quiet, while April sees a sharp increase in trekkers and becomes the busiest month. Crowds remain moderate through May.

2. Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is another excellent season for the Mardi Himal Trek. After the monsoon rains, the skies generally become clearer, and the surrounding landscapes appear fresh and green. The season offers good mountain visibility, making it a popular time for trekking in the Annapurna region.

Breakdowns for each month are given below:

  • Sky visibility: Sky visibility transitions from occasional afternoon cloud in September to perfectly clear days in October, followed by exceptionally sharp views in November.
  • Daytime temperature: Daytime temperatures at lower elevations drop gradually from a warm and humid 25°C in September to a mild and cool 10°C by the end of November.
  • Nighttime temperature: Nighttime temperatures at High Camp drop drastically as the season progresses, shifting from a chilly 5°C in September to a freezing -10°C by November.
  • Trail conditions: Trail conditions evolve from wet and muddy in early autumn to perfectly dry, stable, and clean tracks throughout October and November.
  • Crowds: Crowd numbers start thin in September, spike to maximum capacity during October, and gradually thin out to moderate levels in late November.

3. Winter (December to February)

Winter is suitable for trekkers who enjoy cold weather, quieter trails, and snow-covered mountain landscapes. During this season, the Mardi Himal Trek offers beautiful views of snow-covered peaks and peaceful surroundings. The skies can be clear, particularly in the mornings, providing good mountain visibility.

Month-by-month breakdown:

  • Sky visibility: Sky visibility is at its best during winter, with clear blue skies and sharp, unobstructed views of the mountains.
  • Daytime temperatures: Daytime temperatures remain cold throughout the season, ranging from chilly conditions in the lower forests to around freezing at the highest camps.
  • Nighttime temperatures: Nighttime temperatures at High Camp can become extremely cold, often dropping to around -15°C. Warm layers and good-quality thermal gear are essential.
  • Trail conditions: Trails are generally dry and stable at lower elevations, but the final section toward Base Camp can become icy and slippery. Microspikes or other traction gear may be needed.
  • Crowds: Crowds are at their lowest during winter, making the trails peaceful and quiet. However, many teahouses may close for the season, so accommodation and food options can be limited.

4. Monsoon (June to August)

The monsoon season is generally the least favourable time for the Mardi Himal Trek. During these months, the Annapurna region receives heavy rainfall, making trails muddy, slippery, and difficult to walk on. Clouds and mist frequently cover the mountains, reducing visibility and limiting opportunities to enjoy the Himalayan views.

  • Sky visibility: Sky visibility is highly unpredictable during the monsoon, with thick valley fog and heavy rain clouds often hiding the mountains for days at a time.
  • Daytime temperatures: Daytime temperatures remain warm and humid at lower camps, while frequent rain keeps the higher-altitude sections comparatively cooler.
  • Nighttime temperatures: Nighttime temperatures stay relatively warm across the camps, with less chance of freezing temperatures.
  • Trail conditions: Trail conditions can become very slippery and challenging, with thick mud, wet rocks, and possible landslide areas along the route.
  • Crowds: Crowds are at their lowest during these wet months, leaving the trails peaceful. Forests and hills are lush and bright green. You can see many stunning waterfalls along the way.

Which Season Should You Choose for the Mardi Himal Trek?

Spring and autumn are suitable for most trekkers who want comfortable walking conditions and clear mountain views. Spring is particularly appealing if you want to see colourful rhododendron forests, while autumn offers generally stable weather and excellent mountain visibility.

Winter can be an option if you enjoy cold weather and quieter trails, provided you are prepared for snow and freezing temperatures. You can enjoy quiet green trails during monsoon and view stunning waterfalls and springs along the way. Monsoon trekking is possible, but proper planning and flexibility is required. You need to stay updated on weather changes.

Your choice ultimately depends on the kind of experience you want, your trekking experience, and your tolerance for different weather conditions. Regardless of the season, checking the weather forecast and carrying suitable clothing and equipment will help make your journey more comfortable.
